Why Constipation Isn’t Just a Gut Problem: Understanding the Nervous System Connection

Constipation is one of the most common complaints among both kids and adults — and often, it’s treated like a plumbing problem: more fiber, more water, another supplement. But what if it’s not just about what you eat?

If your child (or you) are still struggling despite doing “all the right things,” it may be time to zoom out and look at the bigger picture — especially the role of the nervous system.

The Gut-Brain Connection: More Than a Trend

The gut and brain are constantly talking. In fact, your gut has its own nervous system (called the enteric nervous system), and it’s heavily influenced by stress, sleep, emotions, and environment.
When the body is in fight-or-flight mode, digestion often slows down — because survival takes priority over elimination.

This means that stress, anxiety, sensory overload, and poor sleep can all contribute to constipation.

Why Fiber and Water Aren’t Always Enough

Of course, nutrition and hydration matter. But many families come to me after trying:

  • High-fiber diets
  • Miralax
  • Prune juice
  • Probiotics
  • “More water”

…and still seeing very little change.

Why? Because the body doesn’t feel safe enough to relax and let go.
And no supplement can fix a system that’s stuck in survival mode.

Supporting Digestion Through the Nervous System

Here are a few gentle, nervous system-focused strategies that may help:

Rhythmic movement — Rocking, swinging, or bouncing can help regulate the vagus nerve, which impacts digestion.

Body-safe routines — Consistent meals, bedtime rhythms, and calming transitions help the body feel secure.

Nervous system awareness — Supporting regulation through breathwork, grounding, or play can ease physical tension and support bowel movements.

Environment check — A chaotic morning routine, bright bathroom lights, or overstimulation can impact how the body processes elimination cues.

When to Seek Holistic Coaching

If constipation is an ongoing issue — especially if it’s paired with:

  • Meltdowns or sensory overwhelm
  • Frequent tummy aches
  • Bedwetting or poop accidents
  • Resistance to using the bathroom

…it might be time for support that goes beyond a supplement or food chart.

In my Constipation & Gut Health Coaching Sessions, I help families:

  • Understand the root-patterns behind their child’s (or their own) symptoms
  • Identify daily rhythms and stressors affecting digestion
  • Create doable, natural support strategies that work for their real life

You’re Not Doing It Wrong — You Just Need a Different Lens

If you’re doing all the “right” things and still feel stuck, it doesn’t mean you’re failing. It just means there’s more to the story — and that’s where holistic education and support come in.

Let’s figure out what your body is trying to say, together.
